Guest Blogger: Crazy Mom Quilts - Make a Zig Zag Quilt (without piecing triangles)

Here's how to make a zig zag quilt without piecing those pesky triangles!
First, select your fabrics.

You will need:
- 9 quarter yards (not fat quarters) of coordinating print fabric
- 1 3/4 yards of solid fabric
- 1/2 yard for binding
- 2 1/2 yards backing fabric
- batting and thread

Cut 2 strips 3" wide x width of fabric from one of the print fabrics.
Cut 2 strips 3" wide x width of fabric from the solid fabric.

Sew together with a 1/4" seam allowance.

Press toward the grey.

Cut into 5.5" squares - you will need 14 blocks for each row. Each strip should yield at least 7 blocks. Layout as shown (except use all 14 blocks-only 12 are shown here).

Repeat for the next set of fabrics.

Layout the next color...
Continue building the zig zags, repeat for all 9 fabrics.

Now it's time to assemble the quilt top.
Since your quilt squares are set on point, you will be assembling your quilt top on the diagonal.

Join the blocks to make strips, then join the strips together as shown.

Now the quilt top should look like this....

Cut off the zig zag points...

and your quilt top is finished!

The quilt top measures approximately 46" x 61".
Quilt, bind and wash.

And you have a finished zig zag quilt!

Enjoy!

  26. Hi, I am a little confused. The directions say to cut in 5.5 squares. The look like rectangles to me. Am I missing something?

  28. Awesome! I SO need to try this.

  29. The 5.5" squares come from two 3" strips being sewn together.

When you sew the strips together you get a 5.5" wide strip, which is then cut into squares.

    Hope this helps!

  38. I'm a few months late to this ~party, but this looks wonderful! If I want to make a quilt approximately 80"x80", how much yardage would I need for the front?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Brenna,
I would get half yards instead of quarter yards - you may end up with a little extra, but it should be enough to make the quilt top.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thanks for the help! Do you think 1/3 yard of 10 different fabrics would work? I just don't know how much of the solid fabric I would need if I went that route. Clearly, I'm no math whiz!
